The Friends of Wissatinnewag Mourn the Loss of Our Elder Cecile (Wawanolett) Joubert
Cecile (Wawanolett) Joubert, 98, died peacefully at her home in Troy, NY on October 4, 2006, following a short illness. An Abenaki Indian, Cecile was a descendant of the famous undefeated Abenaki leader known in English as Graylock. Cecile was born January 8, 1908 on the Abenaki Reserve of Odanak, Quebec, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Elie and Marie (Nagazeoi) Wawanolett and the devoted wife of the late Alfred A. Joubert. She is survived by three children, Joyce Hamel, Elie Joubert and Edward (Darcy) Shea; six grandchildren, Michele, Jay, Brian, Tina, Debbie and Terry; and five great-grandchildren, Amber, Karlee, Alysha, Luke and Jeremy.

Second Annual Peoples Harvest
Please join us for the Second Annual People's Harvest - a celebration of Native American culture. Featuring performances by Joseph FireCrow, Tom Obomsawin, and Hawk Henries, Native American food, crafts, storytelling, and much more! Saturday and Sunday - September 16 and 17, 2006. 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. each day at the Schuetzen Verein Grounds - Barton Cove, Gill, MA.

Tickets will be sold at the gate only. $8.00 for Adults, $6.00 for Seniors, and Children under 12 are free! A special return voucher will be issued for a $2.00 discount for those wishing to attend both days.

Burial Protection/Sand Bank Restoration Project in Full Swing!
After a successful fundraising campaign, the Friends of Wissatinnewag, Inc. were able to fulfill our contract with the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS)for the Wissatinnewag Burial Protection/Sand Bank Restoration Project.

ARE THE 10 ACRES NOW GOING TO BE A DE FACTO CONTAMINANT DUMP?
Look at the oil and gasoline contaminated snow that Greenfield officials allowed to be repeatedly dumped onto the filled area of the 10 acre wetlands of the historic White Ash Swamp this past winter! Stand with us to protest this further desecration at the upcoming meeting of the Greenfield Conservation Commission Tuesday, June 14th, 7pm at the Greenfield Police Station.

BUMPER CROP GOES TO HELP OUR NEIGHBORS
The bumper crop of indigenous pumpkins from our Indigenous Three Sisters Garden project allowed us to contribute to the food pantry of the Greenfield Center for Self Reliance.

COMING TOGETHER EVENT - NOV. 7, 2009
Join us for a wonderful afternoon of Native American culture, education, and fun. “Coming Together,” a day of sharing aspects of local Native American culture, will take place Saturday, November 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School, 222 Turnpike Road, Montague, MA. The event is free and all are welcome.
